Comfort and strength

A special page in our lucky doll shop, so if you ever want to offer someone comfort with a small gesture, you can find it here on our lucky doll page.

Giving comfort to someone, wishing them strength, is something everyone needs at some point. Receiving comfort is also necessary, of course. Whether it's after the death of a loved one or when someone receives a devastating diagnosis and receives a difficult new conversation. It's precisely in those days and moments that the right words can be a light in the darkness.

And that's incredibly difficult. Just try finding the right words and putting them down on paper... What do you say and what don't you say? Do you use standard phrases and words, or do you step out of your comfort zone and make it very personal?

Because we have the same problem, we make special lucky doll cards With beautiful messages on them, so adding a name is enough to offer someone some comfort. The comforting words during grief and loss will certainly be appreciated. To further enhance your feelings, there are also lucky charm keychains with comforting words that you can give or send to someone who could use a little extra comfort.

Why is comforting or wishing strength sometimes so difficult?

The most important thing for someone you want to comfort is the little bit of attention you give. Whether it's with one of our lucky doll cards, a angel lucky doll or a Lucky charm comfort keychain : it's the thought that counts. The recipient, of course, knows it's hard to find the right words. There's no standard way to say or do something.

To support someone who is grieving, it's crucial not to look away. For example, you can ask what they need. If you can do something for them, you're more than happy to do so. The worst thing for someone in need of comfort is not daring to say or ask for anything. Be sincere and give them attention.

If you find it difficult to approach someone, one of our lucky doll cards is the perfect solution. This way, you won't feel like you can do it "wrong"; a few beautiful words on a get well soon card can make all the difference! It's not about perfection with a get well or condolence card, but about the authenticity and honesty with which it's given or sent.

So it's better to write or say something small, something sweet, or something "real" than to remain silent. There's no right or wrong in these kinds of unpleasant situations.

And if you give a small gesture with a lucky charm, that lucky charm will always remain connected to the event when it was received, and the comfort will therefore remain close by.

What are the biggest pitfalls with words of comfort?

If you're looking for a condolence or support card, I wouldn't put words like "It'll be okay" or "There must be a reason this is happening." These are painful words that people can't relate to. You undermine the grief of someone who will then become more alienated from you than comforted and empowered. Sometimes, things just don't get better...

I wouldn't put words like "you have to be strong" or "with your fighting spirit, everything will be alright" or "you can overcome this" on a "get well" or "comfort" card. That essentially implies that it can be solved with fighting spirit or perseverance. As if, once you've finished your treatment, you'd "lose." That can't be your intention, and that's why we have beautiful good luck cards that speak louder than words.

If you're missing a card with a nice message, you can email us at info@gelukspoppetjes.eu and we'll see if we can create a card with a nice message for our consolation cards page or design a beautiful lucky doll that fits your idea.

Whether you send a lucky charm card or call someone, it doesn't matter, but let them know. It's always nice, and if someone doesn't want to hear from you, they'll definitely tell you. Being ignored is worse than reaching out. The person who needs comfort isn't looking for a solution, but for recognition. And you can give that with one of our beautiful, lovingly designed lucky charm cards.

How do you write comforting words in a card about sadness?

Begin your lucky charm card with "Dear" or "Best," which immediately makes the recipient feel seen and personalizes your message.

Show that you're giving space to someone else's feelings; for example, "Words aren't enough," "Some days you need a little extra love," or "I don't know what to say." This shows that you're empathizing without offering a solution.

You can also let someone know you're willing to help them if they'd like, simply by writing, "Is there anything I can do for you? Please let me know." This allows them to indicate whether they'd like help with anything. You keep it open-ended.

It would also be very sweet if you send another card later, for example on a death anniversary or after a few months, just let them know that someone is thinking of you.

What are appropriate words of comfort when someone is ill and has a serious diagnosis?

When someone receives a serious diagnosis, for example, a serious illness, it's very difficult to find the right words. You don't know what to say. But maybe that's precisely what you're allowed to say... We also have beautiful lucky doll cards for that in our lucky doll collection.

And of course, not everyone is eager for a conversation or confrontation. But you can always ask what someone needs, for example, can I be of assistance? Running errands, taking a walk together, truly being there for someone! But feel free to let me know if there's no need for it.

Feel free to send a sweet card with a hugging good luck charm to show someone you're thinking of them. A card offering strength or comfort is always a kind gesture in these sad times.

Examples of comforting texts (sadness and illness)

  • I'm thinking of you during this difficult time

  • Some days you just need a little extra love

  • There are no words for so much sadness.

  • Sometimes we feel so much, but know so little to say.
  • "I hope you have people around you who are holding you up – now that it's so hard."
  • You don't have to be strong. Anything is allowed.
  • 'I wish you much strength and love, today and all the days to come.'
  • If there's anything I can do for you, no matter how small, I'd be happy to do it.
  • It's okay not to be okay sometimes
  • I hope you find a little bit of sunshine tomorrow.
  • Even if there is no solution, I'm standing by you
  • Your sadness or fear does not have to be smaller than it is now.

For example, this could very well be:

  • If possible, highlight the name of the lost loved one ('I often think of Kees').

  • Actually offer your help or company.
  • Let silences exist when you are together.
  • Also send a card or message weeks or months after the bad news.
  • Reach out, even if you don't know what to say.

This is not a good example:

  • Avoiding contact 'because you don't know what to say'.
  • Standard phrases like 'everything will be fine'.
  • To put something into perspective that is irreparable for someone else.
  • 'I know someone who went through the same thing and who…'.

Remember that comforting words are always sensitive during times of grief or illness. Listening and staying close are more important than the perfect answer.

From various personal experiences it appears that small (and sometimes practical) actions can provide as much comfort as words:

  • Offer concrete help, such as cooking, cleaning, picking up children or taking care of administrative tasks.
  • Help mark important dates, for example by leaving a card on the anniversary of a death.
  • Come along to an appointment, or offer to walk together.
  • Give a sweet good luck charm that reflects the memory of the deceased or provides distraction during illness.

People really appreciate a sweet lucky charm card with a matching lucky charm or keychain with messages like "stay strong," "hug," or "comfort," because help is just as powerful as comforting words. Especially when someone is ill, small, practical gestures make a big difference. From a meal on the doorstep to a handwritten lucky charm card: every sign of attention counts.

What if you don't know anything to say?

There's nothing wrong with admitting you don't know what to say. Sincerity is usually more appreciated than perfectly worded sentences. "I don't know what to say, but I hope you know I'm thinking of you" can be enough. Interviews with grieving people show that most people would rather receive a clumsy, honest card than nothing at all. Words of comfort during grief or illness don't have to be grand or perfect; even a single sentence can be invaluable.

Can you always say 'good luck'?

Yes, but try to add something like, "Wishing you strength during this difficult time. I'm thinking of you." People appreciate sincerity, not canned messages.

When do you send a card with a lucky charm or lucky charm keychain?

Both immediately after the bad news and later in the process, a card with a good luck charm that arrives unexpectedly often has a particularly positive effect.

What are examples of comforting words for sadness?

For example: 'I'm thinking of you', 'So sad, no words', 'A ray of light for you', are all suitable strength and happiness doll cards that you can use for this.

Sending a "good luck" card or a "good luck" doll can be a small, symbolic gesture that can mean a lot to someone. If you'd rather send a sweet flower, bring a favorite book, or take a walk together, include a sweet "good luck" doll card and ask what they need. Feel free to ask, "Do you want to talk, or not?" Sharing memories or an (old) photo album can also bring comfort.

Many people remember years later who stayed by their side during difficult times, reaching out without having to resolve anything. Comforting words during times of grief and illness are therefore not tied to time, but to attention. It is the gesture of being there, again and again, that offers lasting comfort.

Why do people search for "words of comfort during grief" and "words of comfort during illness"?

According to Google Trends, the number of searches for "words of comfort during grief" and "words of comfort during illness" has risen sharply in recent years. Searches for "get well" cards or "soothing cards" have also increased significantly. This is because more and more people are using digital means to offer support when in-person contact is difficult. We can also send the "get well" card with a "get well" or "soothing card" directly to the recipient, with a small handwritten message.

Offering comfort requires attention, honesty, and the courage to sometimes reveal your own insecurities. The most comforting words aren't always grand, but straight from the heart. A sincere message, a small gesture, or the simple fact that you're there: that makes all the difference. By being open, listening, and continuing to empathize, you offer lasting and meaningful support, whether it's through grief or illness.
